Geek Food
Wired (Italy)

This sentence is an introduction. I always find the first sentence of a blog the hardest to write. Not sure why?...moving on. This illustration was for Wired magazine in Italy. I was super excited when I received the email for this project. It has been a dream of mine out of school to illustrate for Wired. The illustration accompanied the article of the top 10 Geek Foods. The AD wanted me to combine the words Geek and Food and see what I could come up with. Huge thanks to Daniela! Here are some roughs:

Potato Chips

Cheese Plate

Hamburger Combo

I had a blast with this assignment. There are so many different kinds of "Geeks" I tried to encompass them all in the last two roughs. The added elements were mainly the ones that resonated with me the most! I'm not gonna name all the references but lets see if you can spot them! (I do wish I could of illustrated the Cheese Star Destroyer a la Spaceballs)

I wish I spoke Italian

Random note: Starcraft 2 is coming out this month!!!

  1. Hey all, here's a new illustration for the Globe and Mail's Facts and Arguments Section. The story is about a mother preparing to go on a trip with her daughter to Paris. The preparation and thoughts of the trip bear down on her everyday before she leaves. Thanks to Cinders for my first project for the Globe!

  2. Hello all! Recently I have been working on some animation shorts for Kickpixel. It's been a fun experience doing these as well as a big challenge. These are in no particular order but, Run Man Run was the first one I did and Cannot Connect is the latest one. Hello all! Recently I have been working on some animation shorts for Kickpixel. It's been a fun experience doing these as well as a big challenge. These are in no particular order but, Run Man Run was the first one I did and Cannot Connect is the latest one. This summer I decided to focus on marketing and working on my Kickpixel art. I didn't take a complete hiatus on my work from juansolon.com, as I definitely still take on assignments for that. I wanted to try something different and sort of feel new again. it's an enlightening experience and it has given me a fresh new out look in both forms of work I do. I just want to thank you for all the positive response to the work. I know it really shouldn't matter what people think about your work, but its always a nice feeling when someone "likes, dribbles,or retweets" your stuff. So thanks a tonne to everyone for that. The Kickpixel work initially was just for fun and a test. I also wanna send huge thanks to Diego Garcia who has been a tremendous help in teaching me. As well as helping me a lot with the motion aspect of things. This was something I started for fun, like I said earlier. But I think the alter ego has grown and settled on me. Where does it go from here, I'm not too sure. But hopefully I'll be making more images and videos to make you all laugh and smile.

  3. Here's a full page illustration I did for Investment Advisor. The article was about creating tangible value in your 401k practices. I made roughs with two different angles, the first being finding a path to a successful retirement and the next was creating tangible value. Really had fun doing the roughs and the final. Thanks to AD Chris Nicholls for the great direction!
Some rough ideas all of these I would of loved to do as well.

  4. A cover I illustrated for an Irvine Visitors Magazine. I was really excited to do the project mainly because it was the first cover assignment I've done. I did a similar map illustration of Newport Beach for the Paddle 2 live poster and they wanted something with a similar feel. The challenge always is to make the complicated area simple and informative, and it's always a fun challenge figuring it out. Thankfully Google Earth is an amazing help when map making!
Also I've started a new series called Daily Dinosaur on my kickpixel.tumblr.com tumblr check it out if you have the time!

  6. Last week I announced I just launched a website I was working on showcasing my pixel illustrations. Kickpixel.com is finally live! I've been working on this site during the extra classes I was taking at OCADu and I'm really happy that its done. It's the first version of the site so I'm still working on some improvements and definitely taking some suggestions so please do let me know. email at kick@kickpixel.com for any suggestions! Honestly it's been a nice change of pace changing up to this style of illustration. I'm still discovering some great techniques and some big no-no's for pixel art. It's a really great learning experience and really excited to see this forward.
Also here's a new portrait of Jay-Z to share, enjoy and more to come!

  7. Another Rap artist portrait of one of my all time favorites Eminem (Slim Shady). In elementary school and high school I pretty much grew up listening to him. You know during those days where you had to pay a friend to burn you a mix CD. I remember the first time I saw Eminem was watching BET with my brother then "Hi My Name Is" came on. We both remember thinking who the hell is this guy? Man this dude does not have a chance. Little did we know...LITTLE DID WE KNOWWWWW!
Here I did drawings of The different Eminems: 8 Mile Eminem, Blonde Eminem, and weird looking glasses Eminem. Eugh he really needs new glasses. If there is any rapper you would want to see let me know!

  8. I was having a lot of fun messing around with my Kickpixel site and pixeling shoes, that I thought I would give portraits a try. I'm also thinking of making a separate portfolio for my pixel art. Would be awesome to market this style I think. Here is another side project I forgot to blog post about. I wanted to challenge myself to do an interior this style. So what better place than the mode of transport I'm most at THE "GLORIOUS" TTC SUBWAY SYSTEM.
In other news cauliflower is delicious.

  9. Heyyo, here is a recent illustration for Rogue magazine on Filipino comic heroes. I was asked to redraw some classic characters and put my own spin on them. Huge thanks to Miguel for the awesome project! Inprint version and below a quick sketch with the layout. I was lucky enough to visit the Rogue offices during my trip to Philippines last year and thank Miguel Mari and Miguel Lugtu for their awesome hospitality. Unfortunately you can't get Rogue magazine in North America but you can view it online through Zinio. Always glad to do something for Rogue magazine, makes me proud to be a Filipino!

  10. I've been trying out some different things recently with the Ebony Pencil. I was never really big into shading in my illustrations. I just really relied on the linework most of the time. However when I'm sketching I really have fun shading. So I'm trying to experiment more using shading in final pieces.

Here's a drawing of Brandon Jennings, one of my favourite pointguards in the NBA. Why? ITS SIMPLE, he's the best guy on my fantasy basketball team (YOU KNOW IT). But really he's an amazing basketball player and with less than 2 years in the league under his belt, he's established himself as one of the top PG's in the game.

He plays for the Milwaukee Bucks, So I wanted to incorporate that within the image. So the fun thing to do was give him Buck Antlers.

Also! In other news I started a new blog called KickPixel It's shows shoes I own/want in pixel versions! Here's one I did of Jordan IIIs
